Liberation of Delegation
Are you an Entrepreneur, Solopreneur or Business Owner? Feeling Overwhelmed and Exhausted?
To start, let’s take a long, deep breath. You are probably used to managing multiple tasks on your own, but now is the moment to welcome delegation, whether it is through an employee or a freelancer.
This is a quick and simple guideline for delegating a task. While it may not cover every detail, it is a starting point that sets things in motion and gives you a sense of freedom, inspiring you to start your next delegation process.
Keys to Delegation
Baby Steps: Start small and build up.
Keep It Simple: Don’t overcomplicate – simplicity wins.
Practice Patience: Be patient. Prioritize functionality over perfection.
- Baby Steps: Start by identifying the tasks that are the most time-consuming, distracting, or the least critical to your direct involvement. This is your warm-up session to help you ease into the process and get a feel for it. Once we’ve tackled these, we’ll be better equipped to handle more complex and crucial tasks.
-
Create an SOP: Choose one of these tasks and break it down into a series of steps. This process will result in a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), which should not be perfect, nor must it be. An SOP is a guide that outlines the steps required to effectively complete the task. Hence, do not strive for perfection; instead, focus on functionality. In reality, it will never be perfect.
-
Delegation: Assign the task to a member of your team or consider hiring a freelancer who can handle it competently. Share the SOP with them to provide clear instructions.
- Guided Walkthrough: Initially, go through the SOP with the team member while completing the task together. This step ensures that they understand the instructions and the process.
- Independent Execution: Once they are familiar, have the team member complete the task on their own, using the SOP as guidance.
- Continuous Improvement: Encourage the team member to assess if the SOP provides clear instructions. If not, empower them to edit the SOP to enhance clarity. It evolves as you learn, adapt, and refine your approach.
- Evolving SOP: Understand that the SOP evolves alongside the process. Others may find better ways to optimize it, or changes may occur due to unforeseen events.
-
Assigned Ownership: Ensure the team member is assigned to update the SOP at agreed intervals. This ensures the document remains accurate and relevant.
As a small business owner, the weight of handling everything on your own can be daunting. However, delegating tasks that don’t necessarily demand your direct attention can be liberating. It opens up more time for you to concentrate on the core aspects that drive your business forward.
The process can take a lot of time and resources from your team, which might be in short supply. This is when you should consider enlisting the assistance of a professional who can help lighten the load for you.
